I, Melissa Walker, better known as Mel, am just a lowly little creature that dreams big and loud. It is this very reason that made me pursue a degree in the arts. I graduated summa cum laude with a degree in film/video from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2008. I strive to make sense of my own personal memories and how they have shaped my identity through animation and illustration.
My art explores the psychology of dreaming, feeling trapped, being caught up in extraordinary circumstances, being pushed to one’s limits, survival and the impact of the environment around oneself as well as the impact one has on the environment. These themes are intertwined within my own personal experiences and combined with my child-like imagination and apprehension for life. Art has been a constant in my life, evolving and growing along with me. At once, providing limitless boundaries from which to escape in and at other times tormenting me with the impossible task of trying to perfectly recreate the world that rests behind my eyelids. The desire to escape reality for the much more inviting world of daydreams is both fantastic in its whimsy, yet maddening due to the depths of loneliness it so inevitably presents. It is this very concept that reveals itself in my work.
